2011.2.11 NA

Task 1

Q: What personal quality do you admire most? Creativity, courage or intelligence? Why?

A: I admire courage most. I think courage is the prerequisite for success. Person with great intelligence but without courage are unlikely to do something remarkable, as they usually cannot take the courage to conquer these difficulties. Creativity and intelligence are both essential to success, but unlike courage, these abilities usually come naturally. In my opinion, person with less intelligence but greater courage are more respectful.

Task2

Q: Listen to music while studying?

A: Definitely, I prefer to stay in a quiet place while I am studying. A quiet place makes it easier to concentrate on what I am learning. I have tried playing music when I was studying. I just found that I could neither focus on the book nor enjoy the music. And I was always distracted from what I was reading. Although, music can make people relax, I think it is not wise to listen to music while studying or working. It is a better choice to listen to music after that.

2011.3.4 NA

Task 1

Q: Job offer

A: I would suggest him consider all the aspect while making that decision. Because taking that job offer usually means he would be far away from his family and friends for a long time. What’s worse, in that town, everything would be new to him. It takes time to become familiar with the surroundings and to make new friends. However, if that job is indeed what he is interested in and cannot be found near his hometown, I think, it would be worth while making these sacrifice.

Task 2

Q: studying with others or alone while preparing for an exam?

A: I prefer study with other students while preparing for an exam. For one thing, the notes taken in the class is usually important, but I cannot take everything down. So when I was with other students, I could borrow their notes as a necessary complement to mine. For another, when I come across some difficult problems that I am unable to solve, turning to other students for help is a good choice. After all, people cannot know everything. Sharing with each other is essential for both studying and working.

2011.3.11 NA

Task 1

Q: Pets in dormitories?

A: I am certainly against the plan allowing students to keep pets in the dorms. First, there are different kinds of pets, and some of them can bring trouble on other students. For example, if someone kept a dog in the dorms and the dog barked in the resting time, it might make others suffer when trying to get to sleep. Second, keeping pets takes much time and great patience. It will distract them from studying. All in all, it is not wise to allow students to keep pets in the dorms.

Task 2

Q: Study in the library or at home/in a dorm?

A: I prefer studying in a library rather than at home or in the dorm. First, the library is quieter. Studying in the library makes it easier for me to concentrate on what I am learning. Second, the library usually has a better learning atmosphere. If everyone else nearby is reading carefully, I am gladder to study. Home and dorms are places for rest. If my roommates were playing computer games in the dorm, it would be rather difficult for me to stay focus on the book.

2011.4.2 NA

Task 1

Q: Suggestions to open a restaurant

A: First of all, make a survey on local people’s taste. If most of them preferred Chinese food, it would be a bad idea to open a western restaurant. Second, avoid opening a restaurant with food style similar to others. If there’s already a similar restaurant nearby, it would be hard for his new restaurant to survive the competition. Third, make the restaurant located in a busy street. In my opinion, more people passes by, better the business of the restaurant will be.

Task 2

Q: Today’s college students need to study harder?

A: I cannot agree more with this statement. Obviously, today’s competition for college students is much fiercer than yesterday. Because with the increasing number of college students, there are not enough jobs available. When more than one student is applying for one job position, the company will definitely choose the better one. Therefore, students need to study harder to be more qualified, so as to stand out in all the applicants.

2011.6.25 NA

Task 2

Q: Advice from parents or peers?

A: I think the answer depends on circumstances. If I came across problems, such as how to choose a major or a job, I would prefer to get advice from my parents. Because they usually have rich social experience and can help me make wise decisions. But when it comes to problems like how to learn efficiently, how to choose a cell phone, I prefer turning to my friends for help. In these cases, they are more experienced than my parents and grandparents.

Task 1

Q: Describe a funny person.

A: This question reminds me of a very famous film star, whose name is Xingchi Zhou. His words and deeds in the film always make me laugh to tears. His films which have become classical comedy are my favorite programs. He acted in his own style. I learnt that when he was casting a film, he always thinks up new and funny idea by himself. It is no exaggeration that Xingchi Zhou is the Mr. Bean of China.www.shanpow.com_1.Which,of,the,following,personalities,you,admire,most:,creativity,,courage,,or,intelligence。

Task 2

Q: Busy schedule? Lighter schedule?

A: I prefer a lighter schedule with a lot of free time, because, I cannot make plans taking everything into consideration. For example, if one of the professors gave me an extra task, but my schedule was already full. I had to make changes to it. My point is, we cannot foresee everything that gonna happen. A lighter schedule is much better, as I can insert different activities into it in different situation.

(A)

In the old days, fresh food had to be eaten in the city no more than one or two days after it was left the farm. If (25) _________ (keep) longer, it would spoil. One of the reasons behind it is

(26) _______ the air contains many living things that can harm our food. Some things, such as insects can be seen by us. (27) _______, like bacteria, can be seen only with a microscope.

All living things need water and man discovered that (28) _______ the water is removed, the activity of the bacteria which cause food (29) _______ (go) bad is prevented. In other words, we can protect some of our food by drying it; besides, living things can grow only at certain temperatures, so we can also protect our food by heating or cooling it.

A New York man had (30) _______ idea. He filled a wooden railroad car with tons of butter. The car was hooked to a train and pulled from New York to Boston.

How could this be done? The butter (31) _______ (pack) in ice and twice during the trip, more ice was added. This was the first refrigerator cars and mechanical refrigerator at homes and stores and other places (32) _______ need them.

Mt. Qomolangma was first conquered in 1953, (33) __________ Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing, his guide, became the first climbers to reach the top. More than 750 times have people tried to conquer the mountain, but not all successful, yet every climber knows the danger. This doesn‟t stop teams of climbers (34) __________ (arrive) at the base camp every year with the courage of reaching the top.

Two such climbers and two unlucky ones are Scott Fischer and Rob Hall. Fischer, an American guide with much experience, was lost in a terrible storm which (35) __________ (sweep) across the mountain. A rescue team found him and his friend, but didn‟t manage to bring Fischer to safety in the terrible conditions because he was dying. New Zealander Rob Hall, another experienced climber and guide, was lost near the top. These two men had something (36) ______common: they were both guides and always took a “tour” of (37)________(experienced) climbers up the mountain.

There is a lot that can go wrong in an action to reach the top of Mt. Qomolangma; a sudden change in weather conditions or a wrong turning. Planes will only be sent to rescue if they have been paid for in advance. (38)______ ______ ______ all these, there is a business in leading guided tours to the top. Wealthy mountain climbers can now pay 64000 or more to succeed.

Many people wonder (39) _________ guides can hope to look after their inexperienced climbers when they fail to keep themselves alive. Steve Bell, also a guide who has recently led a team to Mt. Qomolangma, believed that they are safer than others, because the guide can ask a weak climber to turn back at any point if he feels that the climber is a danger to the team.

(40)__________ these expeditions are safe or not, many climbers feel they have turned Mt. Qomolangma into a business, like a park for the very rich people. One truth, however, will always remain: it doesn't matter how much money you have, if you make a mistake on Mt. Qomolangma, the possible result will be death.
